Hazel Elsie Brown
July 19, 1926 - May 17, 2009

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful lady who holds a special place in all of our hearts. Hazel was born in Denaby Main, Yorkshire England and worked as a governess. She immigrated to Canada in 1947 to marry an Air Force Soldier whom she had met during the war. She lived in Flanders, Atikokan and Fort Frances, Ontario where she had many friends and her weekly bowling league.

In 1976, she followed Gwen & Gordon to Swan River, Manitoba. At the age of 50, she went back to school to take her Child Care Worker Course and worked for many years in the Swan Valley Day Care Centre. The little kids “loved” Hazel, always a knee to sit on, a hug to give and a tear to wipe.

In 1991, she once again followed Gwen & Gordon, and the Yukon now became her home. She had a day care in Gwen’s home and was an immense help to Gwen & Gordon and their child care needs. She was always baking cookies, taking kids out for walks and especially loved the crocus hill in the spring in Porter Creek. She was a “crafty” lady and always had projects on the go with the day care and her knitting.

Mom loved to travel. She made many trips back to England to visit the family she had left behind in 1947. She also enjoyed her bus tours to Nashville, The Yukon, PEI, and Wisconsin Dells to name a few.

Hazel was a busy lady, bowling, floor curling and shuffleboard. Her greatest thrill was winning silver and bronze medals at the Yukon and Canada Senior Games between the years 2000 to 2005. She always had a helping hand and a smile for any of her friends in need. Due to her failing health, her outings decreased, but she always enjoyed her day trips to Walmart and tea at MacDonalds. Hazel and Betty Lacey were a team on Saturdays.

Hazel was pre-deceased by her parents, Eli & Sarah Westwood, her two brothers Fred & Ted, her three sisters, Lydia, Beattie and Edith and their spouses .She leaves behind daughter Gwen, husband Gordon, Lindsay & Wes and Scott (Whitehorse), daughter Cyndy, husband Clare (Winnipeg) and their families. A niece in Winnipeg and Red Deer. Also nieces and nephews in England, who ventured to Canada many times and were here to help celebrate her 75th and 80th birthdays.

She was a special, kind, loving, caring and warm lady with the British sense of humour. She was a wonderful Mom, Grandma and friend to many. Her passing will leave a big hole in our hearts and in our world. We loved her dearly. Special thanks to all the nurses on the medical ward, all the home care personnel who helped keep Mom at home as long as possible and to Carol for always “fitting us in”. Big hugs and thanks to Dr. Cindy Breitkreutz and Dr. Stephanie Buchanan for all their care, compassion and support these past many years.

There will be a celebration of life on Wednesday, May 27th from 2-4 at the Golden Age Society on 4th Ave. Please come and join us in a celebration of Hazel’s life, share a memory or two and a wee “spot of tea”.
