Marie Rosaline (Rose) Leverman
February 8, 1933 – November 17, 2009

On November 17, 2009 Rose’s spirit left this world to join her creator, friends and members of her family who have gone before her. Although extremely sad, her daughters are relieved that she is now free and at peace.

Rose was born Marie Rosaline Lorgere, the second youngest child in a family of 10 children in Eelbrook, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia Following completion of high school, Rose spent seven years in active service with the Royal Canadian Air Force. She was posted to a number of Canadian Air Force Bases with her final posting in Whitehorse. Upon her marriage in 1958 to her children’s father, Gerry Leverman, she took her discharge and began her new life as a wife and mother.

Her first daughter, Denise, was born in 1959. She must have loved girls because she went on to have three more, Jeanette, Catherine and Linda. With her open heart she also welcomed many neighbourhood children into her home as part of her extended family. Her return to the workforce in 1969 with the Department of Public Works Canada (DPW) fostered the formation of many great friendships. These friendships provided her with a great support network for raising her children on her own. She was acknowledged for her dedication, work ethic and service excellence to both the DPW Department and it’s clientele through a Deputy Minister’s Award just prior to her retirement in 1992.

Rose’s love for a wide variety of interests and hobbies was shared with and passed to her daughters and grandchildren. Sing-alongs at family get-togethers accompanied by Nana playing her guitar will forever be remembered fondly. Rose loved the outdoors and modelled this for her family through covering many miles on foot, skates, bicycles or pulling a child-laden sled. Even at 65 years of age, Rose could be seen along the Alaska Highway riding her daily self-prescribed 15 kilometres. She enjoyed these activities for as long as she possibly could. On family camping trips she almost always sported a ball cap that read: “The worst day of fishing is still better than the best day at work.” Her love of flower gardening, music, reading and writing were in evidence everywhere. Embroidery and knitted hand-made socks and mittens were traditional for her entire family every Christmas. Family members always knew they were getting something hand knit when the inscriptions on the carefully wrapped packages were signed: “warm wishes”.

Rose was an active member of the Roman Catholic faith and after retirement shared her kind heart and generosity with others in different capacities. Students from Hidden Valley and Elijah Smith Elementary Schools spent time “Reading with Rose” or having breakfast when she volunteered her time at the Breakfast for Learning programs. She may well be remembered by the kids for her mischievous interruption of classes by bringing her musical Macarina Monkey and Frosty the Snowman noisy toys with her. Angel Hugs and local soup kitchens were graced with her presence until she was just too tired to continue. All this and she never learned to drive!

Rose leaves behind her sister Lorette Baxter of Halifax, N.S., her brother Albert Lorgere of Nelson, B.C.; her daughters Denise Leschart (Robert) of Calgary, Jeanne Kucherean of Whitehorse, Cathie Bolstad (Kevin) of Yellowknife and Linda Leverman-Fike (Chris) of Whitehorse. “Nana” will be very much missed by her nine grandchildren: Jordan and Jessie Leschart of Whitehorse, Keira, Terrylee and Allister Kucherean of Whitehorse; Joshua and Myranda Bolstad of Yellowknife and Gina Sparling and Bradley Fike of Whitehorse.

Rose’s daughters wish to acknowledge and extend their sincere thanks to the incredible continuing care staff at Copper Ridge Place, Rose’s home for the past three years. Thanks also to Fr. Jim Bleakley, clergy and volunteers from the Catholic Diocese who ensured she had weekly mass; “ Banjo Bob” (Bob Williams), and Dr. Bob Zimmerman. We would also like to recognize the help given from the staff from Macaulay Lodge and various health support agencies. An extra special thanks to all our families and friends. It was your daily, unwavering support that enabled us to assist our mom on her final journey. We are forever grateful for your presence in our lives.
