Alexander MacKenzie, 91, passed away peacefully, with his sons by his side.
Alex was born in Norsewood, New Zealand while his parents were en route to Canada from South Africa during the First World War. He spent his early years on the prairies, then as a young man moved to the interior of BC, the Williams Lake area. After a time spent ranching there, he moved up to Atlin. It was an adventure that he liked to recall.
He rode the rails to Prince Rupert, took a boat to Skagway Alaska, took a train to Carcross Yukon, and spent his last dollars on a plane flight to Atlin, BC. He arrived there with just $2.00 in his pocket. He began working for Nolan’s Gold mines there and met and married his soul mate, Marjorie Alice May Graham (May).
They moved to Whitehorse some time later, starting their family with the arrival of Chuck and 18 years later were surprised with the arrival of John. Alex worked in Whitehorse as the supervisor of the mechanics shop for CN but his heart never strayed far from Atlin. He spent most of his summers mining there.
He took great delight in his Grandchildren and his love of rocks and mining was apparent to all who knew him.
Alex was predeceased by his parents, William Farquar MacKenzie and Mary Sillars Montgomery; his brothers, Jack and Bill; his sister, Molly; his brothers in law, Frank and George; his wife, May; and his daughter in law, Diane.
He will be greatly missed by his son Chuck (Pat), Lisa and Teresa; his son John (Tracy), Brandon, Kessiah, Melissa and Shawn; his sister in law, Olive; his brother in law, Curly; his sister in law, Margaret; and his brother in law, Chuck (Dot).
